The Worth of A Story

The real worth of a story lies in the hero's ability to believe in themselves.

Every hero arc involves the same obstacle, self doubt. It could be a fear, characteristic flaw or a grudge. Each time a hero goes through this period of darkness, they become more real. Everyone goes through a period of doubt in who they are and what they can do. It may pop up in many forms of life, work, social life or even academic life. Regardless of the form it takes, self doubt is an obstacle and necessary process of growth in humanity. It is that moment in the story when all seems lost. Spider Man loses his powers when he doubts himself. Penelope allows people to control in her life in the form of the curse she has grown to live with. A character makes a big mistake, becomes a different person, or becomes indecisive. If a hero did not go through this process, they would never progress or learn to become the hero of the story.
There's a great quote from Henry in ABC's Once Upon A Time. Henry and Emma are discussing the curse, and Emma's past. Emma tells him that she's no hero and Henry replies, "I know the hero never believes at first, if they did it wouldn’t be a very good story." His remark proves that good stories come from the obstacle of self doubt being overcome by the hero.
Heroes transform once they must face their purpose. It is the decision they make in that moment that shows the true strength of their character. It comes with two important elements, acceptance and belief. The hero accepts their role in the story, and they believe that they can change their fate. Alice believes that she can slay the Jabberwocky, Bolt discovers what being a hero truly is, and Lewis goes back to his time to complete his invention and change his situation.
This is what makes a character memorable. Once self doubt is overcome, they achieve power over themselves and the story moves into the final stage.

Korean Drama Review: The Moon that Embraces the Sun

This drama is beautifully written with so many memorable characters. The best character of all is Heo Yeon Woo, wise beyond her years and born with a regal personality. Her journey to remember who she is, and what she can do is a powerful story involving fate, betrayal, rebirth and love. The symbolism in this drama involves the cycles of the moon and the sun. As King Hwon mourns the loss of his bride,  Yeon Woo becomes the shaman who must find a way to heal him. Hwon gives her the name Wol which means moon and is reminded of Hue Yeon whenever he is around her. With the mystery of  Yeon Woo's death and Wol's identity clouding his mind, King Hwon must discover his true enemies and become the great ruler he is destined to be.
Based on a novel of the same name, The Moon that Embraces the Sun is an intricately woven tale with many secrets, surprises and wisdom. I recommend it to any Korean drama fan, fairy tale fan and anyone fascinated with Asian culture.

Plot:
Thirteen year old Heo Yeon Woo is chosen to become the Crown Princess of Joseon until the Dowager Queen plots against her and secretly orders her death. With the help of a powerful shaman’s magic, Yeon Woo escapes with her life, but loses her memories. All believe her to be dead, including the Crown Prince Hwon, who loves her and whom she was to marry. Eight years later, Yeon Woo returns as a shaman named Wol. She has not been forgotten by those she left behind, and her fate is still intertwined with Hwon, who is now the king. She must contend with the current Queen of Joseon, the Queen’s Father, and the Queen Dowager in order to reclaim her rightful place as Queen of Joseon.

Snippet from A Winter Fairy Tale

The sun was still in the sky when I stepped outside. My brother Andrian was waiting.
"Erena." My mother called as she grabbed my shoulder. "Wait. You must be patient."
Andrian bowed to the general and walked toward us. He carried an icy silver sword and his dark hair was covered by an iron helmet.
"Your highness, we have lowered the defense of the ice trolls, but there are rumors of reinforcements. The Troll Queen has started a storm in the east as a warning.
"I understand" Berend said, his white fur bristling. "We must prepare for a raid."
The polar bear stepped forward and the army bowed before him. Berend's gold eyes watched the clouds as Andrian handed the sword to me.
"Are you sure about this?" Andrain asked. I could tell he was holding back. He usually spoke until he was interrupted by a laugh or a shout.
"We have no choice." I said, taking the sword. "If the story is true, this will be the last battle the ice trolls can fight. We have to hold out until sunrise."
"How will you find the Troll Queen?" Berend asked, watching the sword.
"I'll find a way." I strapped the sword to my belt and tied my hair up.
"You're not going alone." Berend said.
"Be careful" Andrian whispered, pulling me in a hug.
"Wait," my mother said, pulling something out of her pocket. It was a comb.
"You can't give me this." I said.
" I can." My mother said putting the comb in my hair. "This comb was a gift from a powerful sorceress. It may protect you in the Ice Troll Realm."
"We must go." Berend said. The army stepped aside to form a path.
I looked at the clouds again. The sun was shining through the shadows.
" It is a sign." Berend said, stepping forward.
I kept my eyes on the white horizon, walking next to the great white bear. As I walked, I thought of my father, hopefully alive, and sitting in a cold cell somewhere in the Ice Troll Realm. This was the last time I would allow the Troll Queen to take something away from me.

Beautiful Song from Dream High 2

This moment is actually very important in the show, because it shows that Jung Jinwoon has grown and changed from the rebellious teenager into the amazing artist that he is. He has learned that songs can be an important way to speak to people that matter to you. In this case, he is speaking to his mother.

English Translation:
I'm sorry
I'm sorry
I'm sorry
Another day has passed like this again
This nervousness that I can't fix
My heart wont stop throbbing
My heart that keeps getting bigger and the lines that I can't get over
Still...I'm still hesitating
You're still shining so brightly that's why I don't think I can't get close to you easily
 Because you're so free
Because I can't get close to you
That must be why I just keep circling around you
You must be inside my hidden heart"

The Magic of Stories

They take me away
to a brighter day.
To an easier life
even with all its strife.
Where love and dreams
aren't ripped at the seams.
Problems can be solved
Lessons can be learned.
Reading a story
won't get you burned.
Your heart stays in tact
but goes out to the one
devoted to the story
and whose journey
has just begun.
The road they take
helps you to believe
that whatever obstacle you find
you will achieve.
Before all the harsh words,
mistakes and regret.
When all hope is lost
the tale's not over yet.
There's always a reason
to enter the fight.
There's always a wrong, and
there's always a right.

Adversity

"Adversity is the state in which man most easily becomes acquainted with himself." - Battleship 2012

I find this quote very true, especially in stories. A character will only learn who they are when they reach that moment where everything is lost or everything goes wrong. What they do in that moment defines who they are and what they are capable of. I just finished reading The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan and I discovered that Sadie and Carter are strong reliable characters when they face adversity. Even with other problems or angst around them, the task at hand becomes their main focus and they always do the best they can. These actions define internal strength of character. Many stories focus on the result of adversity. Mulan faces adversity to learn what she can do. Alice must face the Jabberwocky in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland to discover herself. Aang constantly faces adversity and in doing so, he discovers who he is, and how he can restore peace and balance to himself and the world. Harry Potter is forced to face adversity with every encounter with Voldemort.  Emma finds strength and courage in the face of adversity in ABC's Once Upon A Time. And, of course in the movie Battleship, Alex Hopper discovers what he is capable of when adversity strikes unexpectedly and leaves him to become the leader of a ship he never believed he could command.
Maybe there is a truth to thinking that way in real life. Sure it's not easy, buy maybe a crisis or conflict can be viewed as a test of will and character. This is why authors say that you cannot be too kind to your characters. If you pamper them, they will never learn or grow, no matter how hard you try to force them to. It makes a lot of sense. A character must be relatable to the audience and if the author wrote about someone on cloud nine all the time, it would get boring and repetitive. The character wouldn't change, learn or develop at all. There must be a challenge, a conflict or an intrusion into the character's world. If not, there is no story.
Once a character is faced with a hopeless situation, it is their reaction to adversity that makes them interesting. Any character does this, a hero, a villain, a sidekick and a mentor are all effected by adversity in some way. Their personalities are formed around their experiences with adversity. Villains tend to dwell on the past and hold grudges while heroes rise above their inner chaos and find the strength and courage to believe in them selves. Mentors teach heroes to face adversity through their own experience.
Adversity is a powerful factor in a story, and in a person's life. People learn through experience, and those that overcome adversity are a little more confident in handling tough situations. Real story characters must accept or reject adversity in some way in order to be considered a sympathetic character. Adversity allows a person to discover who they are and what they are capable of. It can be anything, but once the person accepts adversity, they grow a little stronger.

The Temple of HoRangEe

Arina stopped once she saw something moving in the water. The temple was surrounded by water. Only one path led to the temple, but what path? She only saw water everywhere. It covered the front stairs and shimmered in the sunlight. The thing moved closer, and Arina saw orange.
"It's a Tiger." Jok said, drawing his sword.
" I have a feeling we shouldn't fight it." Lin said, blocking the sword with her hand.
Hayne watched the tiger as it approached them. He took two steps forward and saw a carving on the pillar.
"Look." he said tracing the carving.
       "It's a pattern." Arina whispered.
The carving showed a figure eight facing two rectangles. One rectangle was black, and the other was white. Below the figure eight were four circles.
The tiger was closer now, but instead of heading directly toward them, it veered off.
Arina walked toward the water again. she placed her staff near the shore and looked around. The depth of the water wasn't obvious. She couldn't see the bottom of any area near or far from the shore.
"We have to find these circles." Jok said, pointing at the carving. "There's one for each of us, and it looks like the only way."
"This isn't just water." Arina said, pointing at the shore. "It's magic."
The tiger  came full circle and stopped. It held its gaze with Arina before moving toward the temple. She watched as the tiger swam in a figure eight. Once the pattern was performed, the great cat walked out of the water and sat in front of the temple doors. The test was not over.
"Let's try it." Arina nodded to Jok, who pointed to the water.
"The first pillar should be there." He pointed to a place in the water three feet from the shore.
" Who wants to go first?" Hayne asked, watching the tiger.
" I will." Arina said. She walked toward the water and took a step.
The water moved with each step she took, until the water made a small whirlpool. A circle of white marble  The platform rose, along with three others. Jok, Lin and Hayne stood the platforms and the tiger stood up. The water cleared and the symbol of the figure eight became visible.
"Use magic." Lin said, staring at the symbol.
Arina put the staff in the water and waited. The power of wind rushed through the sphere and a light blue whirlwind moved the water along the path. The Tiger bowed it's head and the doors opened.
"One down." Jok said as the pillars formed marble stone paths.
" One to go." Hayne said walking toward the doors.
The Tiger paced twice outside the open doors and walked into the temple.

Serious

Prompt: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be, and what would you do if later on you changed your mind?

The one thing I would change about myself is how serious I am. I'm always on my guard, at work, at home and of course every where else.  I know it is a choice I made long ago. I decided to always be on my guard, decided to be serious. It's an unconscious shield. It goes up during the slightest hint of chaos or change.  It's the one thing that people probably don't like about my personality. But I will admit that I do have times where I wish I could live in the moment.
Worrying is a curse, and it's almost a default of mine.
I isolate myself due to worry, anger, sadness and pain. It's my fault I know, and I also know that it drives people crazy.
I think too much, and I'm always in my own world. So if I could change something about myself, I'd let go of this shield. I might regret doing that currently. Maybe now isn't the time to be selfish, do what I actually want to do, or forget for a while the role I have forced myself to believe I must act in.
It's not something I'm used to. Letting go.
But maybe if I did, I'd have more fun. I'd be able to function in a normal setting without acting abnormal. Would I be more confident? More strong? Would I know that life is meant to be lived? Would I understand that worry is a giant boulder you put on your own shoulders. Would I be able to make the climb for what I want.
I do hold on to dreams, so maybe that's a step in the right direction. I don't want to be isolated. I don't want to be in pain, or sad constantly. Honestly . . . who does?
The truth is, I'm terrified to let go, and jump into the unknown.
Luckily I have two great friends that do their best to make sure I join in on the fun :)

Meaning

It can be simple.
       It can be complex.
            An action, an object.
                  A goal, a dream.
It is a choice, and an opinion.
                             A secret shared between friends.
A story that goes beneath the surface.
                                       A change in your perspective.
Awareness of the world around you.
An  importance of the choices you make.

Meaning is something you create.
It is never set in stone.

Enchanted (Excerpt from Moon Mask)

The mask stared back at me on the wall. The same bright blue feathers and gold trim that hung in the gallery.  The Duchess laughed as I stared. Her shrill voice echoed in my ears. There was something familiar about the object. It wasn't just the design. Almost everything the Duchess owned was adorned with swans, feathers and a strange crest that resembled a type of flower. It had eight petals, each a mirror image of the other.
"Claire. Are you day dreaming again? Honestly, we're going to be late." The duchess said, waving her hand with a snap of her finger.
I heard the words, but I didn't obey. Costin had mentioned something about a mask. How could his memory be connected to the Duchess?
I felt a jolt as the Duchess walked up behind me.
" You know better than to disobey me." she warned in a deep voice.
She was right. I did know better. This wasn't the first time I had stared at the mask. Every time I did, a fog shrouded my memory, and a dull ache came to my skull. Why couldn't I remember? And if I couldn't remember, why did Costin? I noticed that the Duchess always acted the same way when it came to this mask.
"You won't wear it. Ever." she said as she slapped my face. "Now get moving. We can't miss this Masquerade."
I knew she was right, but the ache didn't leave me, not even with the sting of her slap. As far back as I could remember I lived here and accompanied the Duchess to every event. I had always wondered what happened to my parents and why only one memory, of a strange birthday, was engraved in my mind.
"This is your last warning Claire." The Duchess said. "You don't get a third chance."
She left the room, and the weight on my head disappeared.
There was no doubt in my mind. The mask, and this mansion were enchanted. Did the Duchess have magic? I had never seen anything that resembled the potions and curses of the caravans that lined up on the street.
I ran. I ran through the doors, past the coach, and across the bridge. As I ran I heard the fury in the Duchess's voice. I didn't hear the words, but I knew pain was waiting for me when I returned.
Only one thought occupied my mind as I stumbled through the crowded streets; the mask was the key to it all . The curse, the loss of memory and the strange power that the Duchess used to control me were all connected to Costin. I had to find him before the duchess did.

Lessons Learned from Mom

How to put on make up
not too much or two little.
Never give up when
life becomes a riddle.
The days can be tough
but chocolate can help.
Never stop
believing in yourself.
Don't be afraid
to be who you are.
Once you accept it
you will go far.
Shopping is best
with a budget and list
No matter what your goal is
you must persist.
Pride and Prejudice
is always the best
when baking cookies
the day after a test.
Keep a book of quotes
filled with faith and hope.
Stay balanced
when skiing down a slope.
Cinnamon Rolls are the perfect way
to begin a weekend or holiday.
Above all the most
precious lesson I learned
is to always believe
in what you have earned.

When will I learn?

To let things go
To live in the moment
To believe in myself
To stop worrying
To laugh instead of cry
To live instead of die
To act before I think
To carry everything but the kitchen sink
To appreciate all I have
To heal my wounds like a salve
To pursue my deepest dreams
To smile instead of scream

Each wistful moment
Each precious hour
Can be sweet
instead of sour.
Is it a switch inside my mind
set to cruel or set to kind?
What is this pattern?
Is it healthy?
Must I crave
to be so wealthy?
Material things
are never enough.
No matter how hard
I try to act tough.

So who am I really?
Am I kind?
Am I sane
or going out of my mind?
So many questions
and so little time
to think instead of act,
and not make up my mind.
It may be a story
no one wants to hear.
With each passing pain
and each newborn fear.

Sometimes it's silly,
the things that I hide.
I bottle up anger
and keep sadness inside.
I'm probably just like everyone else.
Focusing on others
and ignoring myself.
I forget the wonder
and I don't enjoy the ride.
I watch from a window
made by my pride.

But sometimes in writing
That all goes away.
I remember the good times
and live for today.
I focus on moments
of beauty and life.
I ignore all the bad times
and laugh off the strife.
Where I belong
only God will know.
But I won't belong anywhere
if I choose not to grow.

Friday, May 11, 2012

I think it's time . . .

To take a step back
To make a new wish list
To be grateful for all I have
To believe in more than I can comprehend
To dance
To take the journey
To travel
To learn
To experience something new
To take a leap of faith
To trust my instincts
To be all I can be

Why do I think it's time?
Because time is all I have.
The present is a gift.
The past has come and gone.
If it's holding you back,
it's time to move on.
You can keep the good times
and learn from the bad,
but you shouldn't focus on pain
and what you wish you had.

The time is now
to follow your dreams,
to follow your heart,
to believe in yourself,
to create a future,
to move forward,
to try.

The world never stops turning.
The sun always rises,
and life always changes.
The wise find comfort
in all these things.
Whether your holding on to a dream,
holding back on a feeling or
holding your heart in your hand.

There's always a way.
There is always hope
And you will always have yourself to believe in.

(This is dedicated to a friend who is going through a tough time.)

This is another piece I enjoy writing to. It is simple and soft.

Korra quiz: What is your result?

Here is my result! What's yours?

Take the quiz here:  http://www.nick.com/quizzes/legend-of-korra/korra-trivia-quiz.html

I am proud to be a bender!
I would like to think of myself as a creative person. I try to express that every day by brightening my work environment and expanding my creativity in writing.

If I could bend an element, that element would be water. I love the color blue and I calm down whenever I am around water. From drops of rain to reflective ponds and lakes, anything with water is inspiring and peaceful. Water fountains and gardens are my favorite places to take pictures for writing prompts. I love water plants like lilies and lotus flowers. I also love colorful fish and pictures of the coral reef.
Water also relates to the moon, and I have always been fascinated with lunar mythology and folklore. When I was little, I used to tell people that the moon was my favorite planet.
So if I were a bender, I'd be a Water Bender.

Perfectly Flawed: A Kyouru playlist

This has been a work in progress for awhile, but I think it's finally done. Due to my reread and massive posts of playlists on tumblr, I decided to share my own playlist. Each song represents a specific meaning or moment in Kyou and Tohru's story, and it reflects my own personality in the music I chose as well. I'll point out the important lyrics.
(I don't own any of these pictures. I added them as an accent to the playlist)

The Stars:

"Happy Go Lucky"- Steps

This smile's a frown turned upside down
I do my happy go lucky so well
 I'm even fooling myself."

Tohru begins her story after a tough moment in her life. Smiling is her coping mechanism.

"Monster"- Skillet

The secret side of me, I never let you see
I keep it caged but I can't control it
So stay away from me, the beast is ugly

Kyou begins his story in a dark despair. He is always the outcast, and his past haunts him in more ways than one.

Moments:

"Cry" - Mandy Moore

In places no one will find
All your feelings so deep inside (deep inside)
It was there that I realized
That forever was in your eyes
The moment I saw you cry

This song defines the moment Tohru sees Kyou's true form.

"Love's Divine"- Seal
Then the rainstorm came, over me
And I felt my spirit break
I had lost all of my, belief you see
And realized my mistake
But time threw a prayer, to me
And all around me became still

This song defines Kyou's point of view when he is forced to reveal his true form.

"Only Hope"- Mandy Moore

There's a song that's inside of my soul
It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again
I'm awake in the infinite cold
But You sing to me over and over and over again

Tohru's point of view when she realizes she likes Kyou.

"Learning to Breathe"- Switchfoot

 I'm learning to breathe
I'm learning to crawl
I'm finding that You and
You alone can break my fall
I'm living again, awake and alive
I'm dying to breathe in these abundant skies

Kyou is slowly learning that it is alright to be close to other people, and not everyone will reject him. Especially Tohru.

"Serenade"- katethegreat19

Something delicate
Special like the love we know
My fragile heart beats at times secure and times alone
My first treasure took me years to find
It's what I cling to when confusion clouds my mind

Tohru sees Kyou as a person, not a monster. She can be herself around him.

"One Day"- Trading Yesterday

If I could change the currents of our lives
To make the river flow where its run dry
To be a protocol of father time
Then I would see you tonight

Kyou's guilt from the past causes him to push Tohru away, even though he actually loves her.

"Two is Better than One"- Boys Like Girls and Taylor Swift

I remember what you wore on the first day
You came into my life and I thought
"Hey, you know, this could be something"
'Cause everything you do and words you say
You know that it all takes my breath away

This song seems perfect for the day Tohru gets out of the hospital and Kyou confesses.

"The Year of the Cat"- Al Stewart

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

Tohru has always wanted to be in the year of the cat.

"Beauty and the Beast"- Celine Dion

Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the Beast

This one is obvious ^_^

"The Beauty and the Tragedy"- Trading Yesterday

For I am finding out that love will kill and save me
Taking the dreams that made me up
And tearing them away
But the same love will take this heart that's barely beating
And fill it with hope beyond the stars
Only love

 Kyou's point of view

"Fall to Pieces"- Avril Lavigne

And I don't wanna fall to pieces
I just want to sit and stare at you
I don't want to talk about it
And I don't want a conversation
I just want to cry in front of you
I don't want to talk about it
Cuz I'm in Love With you

                                                          Tohru's point of view

"At the Beginning"- Marx Donna Lewis

We were strangers
On a crazy adventure
Never dreaming that dreams would come true
Now here we stand unafraid of the future
At the beginning with you

Inspirational Music : The Legend of Korra

The Track Team is a genius! I've loved their music since Avatar the Last Airbender, and I've liked their tracks so far for Korra. Perfect music to write by. You can buy the offical, unreleased soundtrack from the Legend of Korra store here:
http://www.reverbnation.com/store/store/artist_2161216?item_type=music
And all the tracks are available on Youtube.
Enjoy :)
