Beauty and the Beast 2017: A Movie Review

Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairytale. Of all the stories I read, this one appeared to be as close to a real representation of love as a fairytale could be. Two outcasts, trapped in worlds that don't accept who they are, find comfort and solace in eachother through the relationship they build over time.
As a live action adaption of the 1991 beloved animated classic, the story, music and casting did this movie justice.
There were a few complaints that I heard of before I saw the film:
Emma Watson's singing
The animation of the Beast
Belle's ballgown etc.
Emma Watson didn't have a strong singing voice, but I liked how pure it sounded. The animation of the Beast could have been better, but I didn't mind. As for the ballgown, I loved that when Belle twirled, it looked like a rose blooming.
(Fun fact: Emma Watson requested a light and airy dress that was easy to move in. This emphasized the importance of freedom to Belle's story.)
I guess if I were to complain about one thing, it would be the fact that Belle didn't walk "with her nose stuck in a book" during the village scene.
For me, the film was more than I could ever ask for in a remake.
We witness the history of the characters, and we learn and grow with them. The songs that were added to the film give it an extra dimension that builds the world of the story.
We learn why the Beast was so beastly in the first place, and we see what Gaston hides behind his vain mask.
One of my favorite additions to the story was the fact that Belle (Beauty) asks her father for a rose as a keepsake from his journey. This is true to the original fairy tale and also influences Beauty to take her father's place.
All the original songs are there, including the best version of "Gaston" I have ever seen. But the addition of the Beast's ballad, "Evermore" will break your heart if you have one. The melody "Home" from the broadway musical is also used in a few important moments and an element of travel was woven throughout the imagery and the theme of the narrative.
Without giving away spoilers, I give this film five out of five enchanted roses.
Nothing will ever replace the original, but I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful tribute to a tale as old as time.

Beautiful

Beauty does not seek perfection.
Instead, she sees imperfection
in all its glory.
Love is the same.
To him, it is a dance
where imperfection becomes art.
At times, the dancers will stumble.
If Love is true, then Beauty
will match her steps to his.
Neither dancer is perfect,
so each mistake
is a part of their performance.
With all their strengths
and all their weaknesses
their story will grow
like a delicate flower.
Beauty and Love
go hand in hand.
Light and Darkness
balanced and sure.
Beauty in the soul.
Love in the heart.
Their story is timeless.

La Belle et la Bete: A movie review

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale, and though I adore the Disney version, there are few adaptions that honor the orginal story. Before I go into too much detail about the movie, I want to introduce a little history.
Beauty and the Beast began as a short story wriiten by Madame Gabrielle Suzanne de Villeneuve in a magazine for women in 1740. It was inspired by folklore and mythology. In fact, one of the earliest versions of this fairy tale is the myth Cupid and Psyche. Many cultures all over the world have some derivative of this tale, but Beauty and the Beast is among the most popular and well known stories.
Villeneuve's story was later adapted into a short story written by Madame Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumount who is better known as the tale's creator and had it abridged and published in a book for children in 1756 .
Beauty and the Beast has evolved over the years from fairy tale to novel to Television show to film. But in France, the most well known adaption, besides the Disney version, is a black and white film under the name of La Belle et la Bete made in 1946. In fact, this version was the adaption that Disney used as an outline to create the animated classic Beauty and the Beast
I recommend watching the 1946 film and reading the original tale before watching the new 2014 film, because you may be confused, and so many people criticize this film based on the Disney version, which is very different from the actual fairytale.
While this movie is true to the original tale, it has it's own mythology and a new story behind why the Beast was cursed, but it echoes some of the genius of Hayao Miazaki's film Howl's Moving Castle, while creating a story of its own.
This film is beautiful. Not only are the special effects like stepping into a painting, the costumes are elaborately detailed, the cinematography is well done, and the acting is wonderful.
Lea Seydoux is a clever, kind and beautiful Belle, and Vincent Cassel is a mysterious, intriguing and layered Beast. Both stars shine in their roles, and make the characters their own.
I give it four out of five roses. A beautiful movie, timeless tale and wonderful adaption.

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast has been on my mind lately, since it's Belle French month on tumblr, and a new film adaption has been released in France, the country of the fairy tale's origin.  I even began writing my own adaption of this story.  So I wanted to write about the original tale, and why it means so much to me.

There is a reason why I love the fairytale Beauty and the Beast. It is the most realistic fairy tale that I know when it comes to explaining true love.
There are so many messages that the story is associated with. One being that you can never judge a book by its cover, and another that to truly love something, you must set it free.
But for me, the story is deeper than that. The story shows that love, true love is not something to be rushed, and it is not as simple as falling in love at first sight. It is a combination of the good and bad of both souls. Whether one may seem more pure or dark than the other, neither Beauty, nor the Beast are ever anyone but who they truly are.
The Beast, because of his appearance, is immediately judged to be fearsome and cruel. In many ways, Beauty is also judged by her appearance, and is almost taken for granted by her looks and personality in the story. But neither of these protagonists is ideal or perfect. Both are lonely. Beauty by being sent away from her only home, and Beast by being locked away in a self made cage.
It is their loneliness that brings them together, but it is their love that keeps them together. Beauty is naturally loving, and her personality is even put to the test with much of the Beast's behavior. But the Beast is also loving, even though he doesn't realize this. He never wishes to harm Beauty, and he doesn't keep her prisoner there for the rest of her days. His ultimate act of love is setting Beauty free, and Beauty's ultimate act of love is returning to his side.
This does not make Beauty a prisoner. She chooses to go because she loves her father, and she chooses to return because she loves the Beast. It is Beauty's ability to love that defines her freedom. It is Beast's ability to love that defines his freedom.
They are both prisoners in society because they are both different. Beauty is different through her personality, her kindness, which rivals even her beloved father's actions. The Beast is obviously different through his appearance. Both of their differences come together and create the psychological and symbolic formula of true love. They both save each other. Beauty saves the Beast from his curse, and the Beast saves Beauty from her cruel sisters, in the original fairytale.
True love is the art they create, even while they believe they are trapped in their lives. And that is the story of most relationships. We are told that if we are single, we are incomplete, and we all feel very different from the crowd. But once we fall in love, it is the desire to love one another that sets us free from daily routine. A relationship is more than just being attracted to someone, it is loving their faults, accepting their flaws and wanting to be there for them. This is why Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale. And I believe it is the reason Disney deems it "the most beautiful love story ever told."

Here are some of my favorite book adaptions/versions:

Beauty and the Beast by Madame Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont

Beauty by Robin McKinley

Beastly by Alex Flinn

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Heart's Blood by Julliet Mariller

Similar Novels:

Souls of Light and Dark ( A Cruel Beauty Fan mix)

Based on the novel Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge.

Writing Prompt 62: A glimmer of hope

Prompt: A picture is worth a thousand words. Write the story behind this one.

The great stone castle surrounded me. I walked its paths everyday, yet nothing seemed familiar or comforting. I was here for my family, locked in an extravagant cage. I was here because he wanted me to be. This strange Beast.
Every morning I walked the palace alone. Every evening he asked me a question, and then left me to the shadows. I began to feel lonely, and I knew that my heart was breaking. Being isolated from all I knew had its own freedoms, but today it felt stale. It was as if my very act of defiance had condemned me to sorrow. Confusion clouded my brain.
Why was I here if I was not needed? And why did my heart long for a creature who ignored my presence until he wished for my company?
Memories haunted my dreams. My few friends when we lived in the bustling town. My family in our peaceful cottage by the river. Loneliness eventually became emptyness. A bird does not belong in a cage, no matter how beautiful it was. And I was already letting him see too much of my heart.
I became desperate for his company, and I scolded myself when I acted like one of those flitty girls who giggled like idiots when a man walked toward them.
       Was I falling for him?
My heart already knew the answer.
       Yes. Yes I was.
I found his attempt at conversation endearing. He was always polite, and never interrupted me, even when I belived that I was boring him. He always bowed before dinner and afterword once I answered his question.
I noticed that he did have emotions, but they were very well hidden. The way he watched me while I accidently knocked over a salad fork or a bowl of strawberries because I had never learned proper ettiquette revealed a touch of amusement. When I told a joke poorly, he supressed a laugh by muffling the sound with his napkin. Even the slight pause he made before answering my questions revealed a nervousness I couldn't understand.
Each answer he gave me brought more questions. Questions I knew he wouldn't answer. Why was he like this? What caused him to live this way? How long had he lived with loneliness? Why was he the nervous one when I was the guest and he the master of the castle?
So, that night, I decided to do the unevitable. I invited him to walk with me. The rose garden was finally in bloom, and no one should miss such a sight. I was bored of the cold walls and dry halls. I longed for fresh air and a step in the sunshine.
To my surprise and delight, he agreed.
The next morning, as the fog crept over the hills, a gentle knock sounded on my door.
"I know it is early," the Beast said, "but I thought the garden was best before the fog leaves."
I followed him to a stone stairway, and we walked into the hazy air. The walkway was a maze, but the Beast offered his arm, and I took it, entranced by the beauty of the flowers dancing in a soft mist. The walkway ended at a bridge made of stone, and that bridge lead to another stone building.
Light graced this area, and the building had tall windows with wooden frames. The forest reflected in them now, with fog shrouding the edges of the glass. A set of wooden doors stood before us, as we crossed the bridge.
"It's beautiful." I told him, "What is it?"
"The library." he said, "Would you like to see?"
I nodded eagerly, and a weight lifted in my chest. While the castle was cloaked in shadow, and the garden in a hazy fog, the sun shone on this building and the flowers surrounding it. It was a glimmer of hope.

More than a provincial day: A Disney Designer experience

So I realized that Belle and Beast were being released today at the Disney Store, and I decided to take advantage of my day off. I did want this doll set if possible, and when I dropped by the Disney store after my writing observation, I was told that the store would release the Belle and Beast dolls, and to be there at ten. Well, the actual raffle for the dolls didn't start until noon, but I was there to witness a magical moment.
Today is the anniversary of the Magic Kingdom Park, and in honor of that day, two kids from the crowd waiting at the store were selected to open the store and call for TinkerBell to get the store up and running.
This entire event reminded me of when I worked at Disney, and I got to see the Safari opening of magic kingdom while getting the coffee stand ready for business.
The cast members set up a pole with a giant lock, and started asking everyone if they had the key. The kids looked around, and finally another cast member, hiding behind the PeterPan display held up a giant key with the Disney trademark intial. The kids were so excited, and they held the key, and unlocked the store.

This is when the cast member at the door announced that the first major event was the release of special edition Eric and Ursula dolls. She told me to come back for the raffle for Belle and Beast, so I spent some time wandering around the koi pond at the front of the mall. It was nice and quiet, and I noticed many different quotes etched in the stone.
"We must not only act, but also dream; not only plan but also believe." - Anatolie France
"Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are." - Bernice Johnson
"To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter; to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life." - John Burroughs.
I think that quote was my favorite.
So I walked around and enjoyed the early morning sun, and the koi fish that swam up to the bridge and poked their heads out of the water. I debated making a wish at the fountain again, or going in to window shop, but I enjoyed the quiet walk in a place I normally knew as a bustling walkway.
Mom met up with me later, and we both waited until noon to put our name down for the raffle.
Now, for those who haven't done this before, the raffle isn't free. It's a chance to purchase the dolls. And this was my first time experiencing a Disney Doll raffle for sure.
In the end we each got a doll, and our names were called one by one. A few names were called, but no one claimed them.
What really made this day special was a couple who had put their names down the same time me and Mom did. The girl was there for her birthday, and Belle was her favorite princess. Her boyfriend put his name down too, and in the end her name was called!
So the event went much better than I expected it to. I had heard some horror stories of the last doll set, but in the end, I had a great day, and now Mom and I have doll sets to display. :)

Book Challenge Day 14: Book from your favorite writer

Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier

I've mentioned Wildwood Dancing and Cybelle's Secret countless times, but I haven't blogged about Heart's Blood which is Marillier's version of a Beauty and the Beast story. It has a darker tone in the plot than her other novels, but this adaption was intriquing and creative.
The story is set in Ireland, and involves the Norman invasion in the twelveth century. The main character Caitrin is a runnaway looking for a job as a scribe, and she comes across Whistling Tor. She learns of the dark magic surrounding its mysterious master Anluan and the secret of his family.
The story has elements of a gothic novel and reminds me of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. The story also reminds me of another novel, written by Peter S. Beagle called Tamsin, which mentioned a similar type of dark magic.
I enjoyed this story, and I came across it recently.
This book is perfect for fans of Fantasy, Jane Eyre and Beauty and the Beast.

Gu Family Book

(Picture by me on Photoshop for iPad)

I have watched four episodes of this drama so far, and I rank it up there with Arang and the Magistrate, The Moon That Embraces The Sun, and Hong Gil Dong.
Someone on tumblr defined it as Inu-Yasha and Fruits Basket, so it's no wonder I love it, but I would also say that it echoes Ruroni Kenshin. The Prologue is intense, but the story plays out like a myth, and a tragedy. The plot echoes a lot of history from The Gumiho legends of asian folklore  and the fairytale Beauty and the Beast. Kang Chi is very similar to Kyo, but a little more trusting of people. His story of self discovery is going to be very interesting, challenging and powerful. This is my new favorite drama!

Mystery Legends Beauty and the Beast a game for the iPad and PC

This game was really cool! And, of course, since it was based off of my favorite fairy tale, that made it even more fun!
Poor Beast is trapped, long after happily ever after, the enchantress returns, and scatters his soul in shards across the kingdom. Belle returns home to witness this curse, and it's up to her to save the prince and restore the kingdom to its former glory.
After you complete the game, there's a bonus story, and a copy of the original fairytale to read!

I recommend this game to anyone who loves fairytales and Beauty and the Beast. Other fairytales have cameos, and clever characters of the game's own world make the mini games and the conversations witty and fun.
I give this game five out of five roses :)

OUAT Challenge Day 19: Your Favorite Ship

Rumple and Belle (RumBelle)

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale, but that's not the only reason I enjoy watching Belle and Rumplestiltskin on screen. The writers explained that Belle and Rumple's relationship was based on the idea of bringing a beautiful soul and a corrupted soul together. The result was Belle and Rumplestiltskin. Belle is bright and happy while Rumple is twisted and depressed. Convinced that no one can love him, Rumple shows a fear of bringing anyone close to him, but does exactly that when he makes a deal with Belle that she will go with him forever and clean the castle for the rest of her life to save her people.
Belle catches on that Rumple is lonely and she, being the curious person that she is, slowly attempts to get to know him, and help him see what she sees. To Belle, Rumple is not a monster, but a misunderstood and lonely person. She tries to convince him of that and almost succeeds until Rumple's own illusion of the world gets in the way.
Rumple's fear of being around others and allowing them to know him blinds him to Belle's genuine affection and convinces him that she only wants to find his weakness. This plays on later in the series when Belle tells Rumple to make a promise he doesn't keep and continues  to try convincing him he isn't a monster.
Their relationship is complicated and confusing, but both Belle and Rumple find understanding about one another and learn at the same pace what a relationship is like.

OUAT Challenge Day 8: Your Favorite Episode

I have three favorite episodes

That Still Small Voice

I loved everything about this episode. From the story between Henry and Archie to the back story of Jiminy Cricket, this episode impressed me because the entire plot was connected so well and the way Archie grows stronger keeps a balance between his actions as Jiminy in Fairy Tale Land and Archie in Story Brooke.

True North

This episode was just amazing because the topic related directly to Emma in this part of the story. Emma grew as she tried to help the kids and her conversation with their father was a step forward from being reserved, to actually admitting her emotions about Henry and being a parent.

Skin Deep

Mostly because this is our introduction to Belle, and I loved the spin they took on the fairy tale. Belle is a strong character and the progression of Belle and Rumple's relationship was a nice story line. Gaston being turned into a rose was priceless. My only problem with this episode is the abusive scene between Mr. Gold and Moe French. In no way was that action justified, and I didn't see the point in that scene at all. Mainly I love this episode because I love Beauty and the Beast.

Fairy Tales

Wisdom disguised as magic.
Lessons disguised as words.
On paper or air
the mystery unfolds.
Delicate details
Mysterious magic
Spells that are cast
Fulfilling or Tragic.
Some call them silly
others, pointless.
Some see the meaning
others could care less.
The power of a story
can only ring true
If the person that listens
Believes that they grew.
Each story brings something
a curse or a blessing.
Morals and Madness
Tales worth telling.
Scattered and evolved
they stand the test of time.
Bringing imagination:
the ring of a chime,
the glow of a star,
the shine of a pearl,
a wish and a dream,
adventure will unfurl.
The meaning in a flower,
a promise by a well,
the tune of a birdsong,
a tree that fell.
All these icons
bring something to start
a journey of the soul,
and a wish of the heart.

Writing Prompt 35: Top 10 Movies

Prompt: My Ten Favorite movies

I loved this movie when I was a kid. (Already a fan of epic adventures.) My aunt would put this on the TV whenever I came over and my eyes would be glued to the screen.

This story holds a special place in my heart. The film came on T.V. very often, and whenever it did, I couldn't change the channel. (Of course this is another epic quest film- starting to see a pattern here? he he)

Does this one even need explaining at this point? Favorite fairytale and a Disney Princess that loved books and adventures just as much as I do!

The book series I grew up with on the big screen. Priceless.

How I got through High School. These movies will always bring back memories of screenings with my Dad and my friends. A very epic saga. I also love the books ( of course).

I watched this movie so many times when it first came out, and read the book before I saw the movie. I love everything about this film and book (even though they are very different). Tristan's journey to move on from the past and build his own future will always be meaningful to me.
My favorite Hayao Miazaki movie. I love Howl. And, Sophie's journey to self confidence captures the magic of this film. Howl's return to humanity and Sophie's  newly found confidence help both characters find a home and give them courage to fight for what they believe in.

This movie really explores the inner and outer conflict of good vs evil. The story also revolves around the meaning of real strength. Steve Rodgers discovers the power of having a good character is stronger than brute strength.
Not only is this film beautiful, it is about living life instead of worrying about what will happen. Marlin's journey from a paranoid father to an understanding parent showed him that he could change his circumstances once he changed his perspective.
A modern reverse Beauty and the Beast story about changing your fate and breaking free.

I love so many movies, and in general I love action packed, fun films. This was actually a very hard choice. But these films spoke to me the most. Each story taught me a different lesson. The Dark Crystal inspired many worlds in my imagination. The Last Unicorn taught me that sometimes stories have a bittersweet ending. Beauty and the Beast defines my idea of a relationship (getting to know each other and going at your own pace). Harry Potter brought magic into the real dramas of school life and adolescence. The Lord of the Rings inspired my first fantasy story with its memorable characters and epic plot. Star Dust taught me the lesson of how to heal a broken and deceived heart. Howl's Moving Castle gave me the courage to believe in myself and what I can do. Captain America showed the inner conflict of doing what is right without allowing others' judgement to control your life. Finding Nemo showed me that life will happen, so it's better to live it instead of worry all the time. And finally, Penelope taught me that sometimes the actual obstacle holding you back from your dreams is really just yourself.
So there you have it. Ten movies that I don't get sick of, and remind me what life is about. This list may change over time. Different stories and characters are always influencing my life and my journey as a writer. But that's the beauty of stories and tales. They grow and change over time. The same message and meaning through a new lens and dream.

What movies make your top ten list? What have you learned from them?
