Adversity

What is adversity?
Well, it's anything that seems to be an obstacle in your path. Anything challenging to you that makes you think, and any sort of change that is not easy to adapt to.

Every protagonist faces adversity, whether it's a difficult choice or a looming monster challenging them to battle.
So what do you do, when a monster is staring you in the face? Do you run? Do you challenge it? Or do you pretend it isn't there?
Many people deal or don't deal with adversity in many ways. Some people judge others by how they deal with adversity.
But why is adversity so important in stories? Because adversity is important in life.
The way a person deals with adversity, and the way they choose to reflect on it really can make a difference in the way they live their life, and how they view it.
I'm going through adversity myself, but it may not seem serious: instead it's a bit embarassing. I almost accepted a false job. So I was scammed. What was the first thing I did? Did I rise up and say no? Did I make a decision right away?
No. I panicked. I began to say horrible things to myself ("You were an idiot." and "You let this happen.")
But did that help me deal with the adversity? Absolutely not.
It's normal to be overwhelmed when adversity rears its head, but it's not healthy to determine that it is your fault. This is a natural response, but it doesn't do anything for you.
Sure you can complain, vent, and blame others, but that still doesn't work.
So how do you handle a difficult situation?
One way to handle it, is to accept it, and use it.
This way is not often taught in schools, or even in everyday media. But the thing about accepting adversity is that you can find meaning in it. That meaning becomes a part of who you are.
It's like leveling up in video games, and the hero's path in novels. Every conflict you face is a part of your story, and your journey. Each conflict is a step toward finding who you are, and just how far you can go.
Now, my brush with adversity is minor compared to others.
My brother has Autism. And I can't tell you how many times my brother, my family and I were judged, ridiculed, and ignored because of it.
We live in a society where different is often ostracized. And now that Autism is becoming more recognized, and less "abnormal" future Autisic children will never have to deal with some of the ignorance and indifference of the school systems that we did.
But that's not the point.
The point is, my brother struggles with things that are not a struggle to other people. And because of this, he believes that he will not succeed in living a normal life.
His adversity is a constant battle with acceptance, and just as we all struggle to accept ourselves, so my brother deals with outward and inward ridicule.
I learned a lesson while working in Korea about the response that kids had to adversity.
In my students' cases. Many of them didn't want to learn English. But when I reasoned with them, and agreed that English was difficult, but I believed they could learn it: things changed.
Did I have to do this? No. But I did, because I understood that when you are faced with adversity, the last thing you want to be told is "you can't". I was offered no guidance, and no extra counseling with these students, but through daily encouragement and positive feedback, they got better.
Now, we're all human, and no matter what problem we face, people will tell us to deal with it, but maybe that's just another way to call it a burden or obstacle.
Instead, you can think of adversity as a tool.
As Aimee Mullins explains in this video: instead of asking "How can I get around this?" we can ask "What can I do with this?".

Seeing adversity, difficulty and even failure as a step toward self discovery may be just the perspective that inspires you to use it. Adversity is the opportunity to write your own story.

Lightning Farron Polyvore set

Due to my excitement over the near release of Lightning Returns, I decided to do a Polyvore set for Light, and I'll probably make a Hope Estheim set next.
I added the lightning bolt earrings for obvious reasons, but the set is actually based off her new look in Lightning Returns, with the exception of the red cape from the first game. The leather arm band is one of her trademarks, and I wanted to include a picture of her from the first game, to reflect the human she once was.

Lightning Returns demo review (Japanese Demo)

So, I will fully admit that I know very little of what is going on in the demo. I can pick up a few phrases from my College Japanese class. But the game looks incredible so far. Lighting is collecting souls, and with Hope's help she is trying to discover the reason behind the chaos that has enveloped the world, changing everything with no notice.
Snow is now treated like a god, with a palace where he allows people to have fun on their final days. From the very beginning, you learn that Light is gathering souls to save them, and transfer them to the new world before the end of this world.
The opening sequence begins by introducing Luxerion, the first province you go through. Light is in the middle of a mission: to bring Snow to his senses. Before she can talk with snow, chaos intervenes and a mysterious girl named Lumina appears. It seems that Lumina is causing the chaos, and she summons the mysterious beasts that Lightning has to battle. Some look like Anubis, while others are creepy floating plants.
Throughout the whole demo Hope talks to you through an intercom, giving you clues and helpful tips on what to do next. I enjoyed listening to Hope and Light banter back and forth while she's trying to track Snow down. It keeps the game fun, and less serious, considering Light's role to be sort of the grim reaper.
Game play itself is similar to Final Fantasy XIII, but the battle system is very different. You fight alone, and can change abilities in order to do a steady amount of damage. It was a little difficult to get used to at first, but after a few battles, it's easier to strategize and knock out your enemies. Just like the first two games, you have a certain amount of attack points, and once they are out, you have to change abilities to do any more damage. You can also use a preemptive strike to lower enemies' HP.

As for the rest of the game's elements, the graphics were amazing, as usual, and the story is very intriguing. I feel sorry for Snow because he's become very jaded since Serah's death, but I am glad Hope has a major role in the game because he's my favorite character besides Lightning.

All in all, this was a fun demo, and I look forward to the actual US release of the game in February.

Things I forgot about until I played Kingdom Hearts again

Sora is random.
Tidus looks so cute as a kid ^_^
Goofy goes through potions like water.
Dodge Roll is your best friend.
Sora can't jump very high in the beginning.
All the different trinity marks!
The post cards in Traverse Town.
One of my favorite places in Kingdom Hearts is the Lady and the Tramp fountain ^_^
The good mushroom heartless ^_^
The Gummi Launch site was featured in Disney Town in Birth by Sleep
The weird faucet in the bizarre room in Wonderland
The barrel trials at Olympus Colosseum >_<
Cerberus is the first really difficult boss fight -_-
You don't get warp drive until way later in the game :(
From the Gummi Ship Space kind of looks like the inside of Monstro o_0
The fairy godmother from Cinderella is in this game!
The slide of Hollow Bastion.
The first key blade you can get is Jungle King from Deep Jungle
Clayton's creepy expressions.
The pretty underground cave in Traverse Town.
All the Ansem Reports!
The moving rocks in front of Merlin's cottage.
The spooky bell in Traverse Town.
When fighting heartless in high places, it is very easy to fall off the tree, building or random platform.
I am not looking forward to winning the Hades cup again.

FF 30 day challenge day 28: Favorite mini game

I love Macalania Forest, and this game was my favorite requirement in the to do list for the legendary weapons. It was so calming compared to the Chocobo racing and the Lightning dodge. The only downside was catching the wrong butterfly and having to fight fiends, but it wasn't as annoying to go through the whole path again compared to riding a Chocobo in the Calm Lands against a fast racer who always managed to reach the finish line before you could.

FF 30 day challenge day 23: Favorite Black Magic Spell

Another odd question, but I have always liked Waterga.
It's literally a giant wall of water that surrounds your enemy and pretty much destroys them.

FF 30 day challenge day 21: Favorite Boss Fight

Hmm, I can think of a lot of boss fights that are on my least favorite list. Every one of them involves Seymour except one, the first Seymour fight at Macalania temple. This is where Yuna obtains my favorite aeon Shiva, and this fight is where she stands up for herself and finally listens to her heart. I like the fight probably because of where it ties in with the story. Yuna's guardians rush in to help her and once Yuna realizes that she isn't alone in dealing with Seymour, she takes a stand and the fight begins. This was probably a difficult decision that she thought about over and over again, until her guardians came and stood by her side. From that moment on, Yuna decides to listen to herself and continues to resist Seymour, even when he kidnaps her. It's a sign of self confidence that Yuna did not show before, and it was that moment that Tidus stepped in and decided to get involved.I guess this boss fight is memorable, because it represents a moment of strength for Yuna and an important decision for Tidus. At this point, they both decide to take charge of their lives and call the shots instead of do what everyone expects of them.

FF 30 day challenge day 19: Favorite Battle System

I got used to the faster battle system of Final Fantasy X2 and now I think that the faster battle system is my favorite. I really understood Final Fantasy XIII's battle system from the beginning and still enjoy the paradigms.
This is my other favorite battle system, just because it is my favorite game.

FF 30 day challenge day 13: Favorite Job

Sphere Hunter/ Gullwing

I loved this job. Fighting fiends and collecting spheres (while searching for Tidus). It was fun performing shows at the Moonflow, going against machina and following clues to discover where spheres were hidden.

FF 30 day challenge day 8: Who do you think shouldn't be on the Dissidia Roster?

Vaan

He was never a warrior to begin with. He always wanted to be a sky pirate, and he was pretty obnoxious and immature. Balthier or Basch would have been a better knight for Cosmos's Army. Even though Balthier was a pirate, he still became a hero. Basch served in Princess Ashe's army, so he was always a warrior. While playing Duodecim, I found that Vann's storyline was very odd. Other than teasing Light every now and then, he didn't do much except fight Galbranth. He also seemed like a secondary character in Terra's storyline.

Kingdom Hearts Challenge Day 30: What Kingdom Hearts means to you

Kingdom Hearts is one of the first games I got for Play Station 2. I actually started the series by playing Chain of Memories, and even without understanding what was going on, the game was fascinating to me. There are so many conflicts: Dark vs Light, Brain vs Heart, Courage vs Fear. It's a complex story that goes deeper into the meaning and reason for emotions. What does a heart mean? Is the brain always in conflict with the heart? And so on.
Kingdom Hearts means a lot to me. Not just because it is an amazing story, but it takes you through Disney worlds and brings back childhood memories while introducing characters that you know from other Final Fantasy games. The main characters are very well created, with realistic inner conflicts and responses to philosophical tests and questions. Sora is a character who focuses on the heart, always there for others when they need him. Riku is a character of the mind, focusing on plans and questioning the world. Kairi is a mix between the two. She is a character of support and hope, always there when Sora and Riku need her. Roxas is an interesting character, curious, pensive and also brave. Namine is quiet but clever, finding ways out of the trap she's in and rescuing others from nonexistence.
The story that started it all, Birth by Sleep was a tragedy between three wanderers. Aqua, the responsible, brave and loyal keyblade master. Terra, the rebellious and brave warrior. Ventus the incomplete but kind and curious drifter. When Terra falls to darkness, the tone of the game changes. This is different than when Riku fell to darkness, allowing Maleficent to teach him how to be evil. Terra makes an active decision, even after witnessing what darkness does, and betrays his master, Erauqs, and his friends. Ventus's story is the opposite, he must confront darkness and subdue it with light. Ventus faces Vanitus, his shadow and fights to regain control of his body. Aqua must face the rift and mend it, using what strength she has left after battling Terra and protecting Ventus. All three wanderers were separated and lost the ultimate battle to darkness.
Each Kingdom Hearts story is a clever allegory about the human condition. Roxas asks the very common, "Who am I?" and "What is my purpose?". Sora looks for hope, wherever he can find it, even with his world destroyed and friends scattered. Ventus must battle his shadow, common in the hero's quest and many other stories.
Kingdom Hearts is a powerful collection of epic and human stories. It is the infinite battle of Good versus Evil, and the human condition of purpose and meaning. It is a philosophical story disguised as an epic journey, involving the characters from childhood memories and the warriors of Final Fantasy stories today. It's a story that means a lot to me, and with each new game, I discover something new about fears and dreams.

Kingdom Hearts Challenge Day 28: Favorite Voice

Roxas/ Jesse McCartney

I really can't imagine Roxas or Ventus with any other voice. It suits both characters and has become a signature to define the exact opposite of Sora. Roxas is calm and Ventus is curious, both of these characters are voiced very well, and their voice actor is the same person, but these characters do not sound the same.

Kingdom Hearts Day 26: Favorite Official Art

I love how epic this picture is. Roxas and Sora look like true heroes.
I love how elegant and detailed this stained glass is.

Kingdom Hearts Challenge Day 24: Favorite Keyblade

Oathkeeper

This keyblade has a story behind it, and symbolizes the promise Sora and Kairi made to return to eachother. This keyblade was also given to Sora the same time Roxas was created (Which is why Roxas also weilds this keyblade)

Divine Rose

This keyblade also has a story behind it, and symbolizes Beast's love and devotion for Belle when he follows her to Maleficent's castle in Hollow Bastion. It forms random rose petals that fall whenever the keyblade is swung.

Kingdom Hearts Day 22: The scene that made you happiest

When Sora returns home in Kingdom Hearts II. That moment was not only a resolution for all the characters, but a breath of fresh air that promised new beginnings and a sanctuary after all they had been through. Of course my favorite part of that moment is when we see Roxas and Namine again, as proof they really do get to exist despite being nobodies. But I also love when Mickey, Donald and Goofy visit their world and they have a cheerful reunion. The ending song is nice and peaceful, while the credits role to show what became of the Disney characters. (Belle and the Prince Dancing).

Kingdom Hearts Challenge Day 21: Organization member you would get rid of

Xaldin

Not only was his boss fight really annoying, he was one of the rudest co-workers that Roxas had to deal with in 368/2 days. His real character Dilan was never very friendly in Birth by Sleep either.

Belle won this fight more than I could.

Kingdom Hearts Challenge Day 20: Character you would cosplay as

Fairy Yuna from Kingdom Hearts II.
The outfit is really cute and looks simple to make. I love the wings on the ponytail and the cute zigzag pattern of the shirt and skirt.

Kingdom Hearts Day 18: Favorite pairing

RokuNami- Roxas and Namine

I know that they don't have a lot of scenes in the original story, but their personalities compliment each other. Namine is quiet and wise, but she is also daring. Roxas is curious and brave, but he is also clever. He faces many risks in order to look for adventure. I love their stories. Namine becoming a hero to save Sora, Donald and Goofy and Roxas discovering his purpose and breaking away from the evil plot of the Organization to save his friend Xion. Both Roxas and Namine were told that they were mistakes who didn't belong, but both of them were determined to be somebody, and they become important to each other.
