Stars

"To the people who looked at the stars and wished." - Feyre
"To the stars who listened and the dreams that are answered." -Rhysand

This beautiful quote is from the book A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Mass.

The universe works in mysterious ways, and sometimes you don't understand what it's trying to say. There are times when it's difficult to listen.

Cory Matthews from Girl Meets World has another great quote about the universe:

"The universe is the most confusing place you'll ever live. But if you listen carefully, you'll find out that it's paying attention and that it cares about you."

I think my pride and my anger prevented me from listening, but now my heart is open to new possibilities. I'm on a path that I can't control, but I can learn from experiences and keep moving forward.

This is my heartsong for the moment. As I go through a time of transition, I will listen.

Wishes Around the World

Wishes come in many shapes and forms. Many countries celebrate a day where wishing is the main event. These holidays have always fascinated me, because I believe in the power of a good wish.
No, I don't think that a wish will come true if you don't go after it. There's a lot of truth in Tiana's father's words when he says, "That old star can only take you part of the way. You've got to help it along with some hard work of your own, and then you can do anything you set your mind to." in the film The Princess and the Frog by Walt Disney Pictures.
Many people who are sucessful began as wishers and dreamers. And it may surprise you to know the career path of some of the most well known people in the world. Life doesn't have a map. And there is no direct plan, but if you focus on a goal, and if you make that goal a priority, you will be amazed at how far you have come.
I have made several wishes, all of which are secrets in hopes that I don't spoil the magic, during my travels here in South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. Each wish I've made is different, but each holds a promise that I will work hard to achieve it. I have come far from where I was six years ago, and the mindset I have has been a huge part of my perspective this year.

Wishes are powerful things. Soon wishes become dreams, which turn into goals and which eventually are achieved as memories that can be looked back on with pride and even humility.
I still have much to learn, but I believe that I will always appreciate the power of wishes.
The truth is, you don't have to wait until New Year, Tanabata or Chinese New Year to make a wish. You don't even have to wait for a star to streak across the sky. You can make a wish at anytime, create a goal, and then you are on your way to amazing things. But wishes don't just happen on their own. You have to make some effort to achieve them, and you have to promise to work hard for that goal.
Each wish I have made this year is a new promise to be a better person, to grow and change into the person I want to become. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to spread these wishes around the world, and I will work hard to achieve them.
If you would like to make wishes, or attend these really cool festivals, here's a list of the places and holidays that I have found, according to when they happen each year.

New Year's Eve: Anywhere, but especially with fireworks involved.

New Year's Eve is a time to make a wish on the fireworks that announce the next year.

A Disney Park: Any Disney Park at any time

Year round Disney will accept wishes, and if they can, they'll make it come true.

Lunar New Year: In Asia on a special wishing tree.

Depending on the zodiac animal that falls under that year, the Lunar New Year is celebrated between January and Feburary in Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, Mongolia and Vietnam and many other countries in Asia.

Typically the new year involves writing a wish on a piece of paper and tying it to a tree.
In Hong Kong, you can make a wish by lighting a lantern, or tying a written wish to an orange and throwing it at a special wishing tree. If your wish hangs on a branch, it will come true. You can also feed the dancing lion money for good luck that year, and donate to the Buddhist temples.

The Star Festival: Celebrated in China, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong on a special wishing tree

This festival takes place on a special day where both the Altair and Vega stars are visible along with the Milky Way. Typically around July 7th. This Festival has many names including Tanabata in Japan, Qixi Festival in China, Chilseok in South Korea and Seven Sisters Festival in Hong Kong.

This is celebrated by writing a wish on a piece of paper and tying it to a tree.

There are many other wishing festivals around the world. Here are some I have added to my bucket list:

Diwali- also called the Deepavali or The Festival of Lights takes place in Autumn in India.
This festival celebrates light's victory over darkness, and the festival lasts over five days. People dress up and light up lanterns called diyas and they watch fireworks.

Loi Krathong in Thailand- also known as the floating lantern festival
This festival involves creating small floating rafts into a river attached to all your worries. After letting go of the raft, you make a wish. It takes place in November.

Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Thailand - Also known as the Festival of Lights
This festival involves releasing a lantern into the sky to make a wish, and there are thousands of lanterns released all at once! This festival takes place at the same time as Loi Krathong in November.

These festivals have always fascinated me, and they are great story sparks ^_^

Regardless of where you make your wishes, they are celebrated around the world. If you know any other wishing festivals, feel free to mention them in the comments.

Writing and Living

Sometimes they are very different.
People believe that writing is a very solitary activity.
It's a little strange to see someone so focused on their notebook or computer screen, and they are not very attentive to the world around them, but for me, writing is living.
With writing I explore so many scenarios, and I am able to better understand the people around me.
Even if I may not always agree with or appreciate them, I've come to realize that life is filled with all sorts of people, and the more different characters I create, the better I understand others.

Writing is life for a writer.
It's the complex emotions, the big questions and the life lessons.
It's the mistakes we make, and the "what if"s afterword.
Writers explore, and through that expolaration, we grow. We learn about who we are by getting to know our characters. We discover what we're capable of when the character must face their demons. And as the character grows, we grow.
It's our way, and it's the most interesting and inspirational stories that stay with us over time.
Love for writing runs in my family, and I am honored to share stories and ideas with my father about books, movies, television shows and my own stories.
My father has just published his book, and his journey from writer to author has inspired me to walk a similar path.
I wish and hope to be an author someday, but until then, I will write and write and write. But more importantly, through writing I live and learn, and hopefully my expreience will benefit others in the future, or even the present :)
It's been quite awhile since I have blogged daily, but I'm going to take up the trend again, and I hope my stories, poems and blurbs will help whoever reads them.
I wish to be a spark of light in a world of darkness, and even though I can't always be happy or positive, through writing, I learn more and more about life.

Stars

When you look at the stars
your problems seem small.
Almost as if
they weren't problems at all.
For each little light
is a ray of hope.
There to help you
learn lessons and cope.
Each star has a story.
Each star has a place.
In the inky darkness
of night and space.
They are there to guide you
and help you to see
that chaos and darkness
have majestic beauty.
They inspire us to dream
and nurture that spark.
To be a bright light
in the realm of the dark.

Dreams, Wishes and Goals

(Inspired by the Emma Approved blog)

What is your dream? What do you wish?
Did you know that they aren't the same thing?

A wish is a longing for something you don't have. It's a powerful want that is usually driven by the way you view the world. Some people wish for little or don't wish for anything. Other people wish for the most dramatic and life changing events to occur in their life. Regardless of what you wish for, it's important to know that wishing is one thing, and working toward what you want is another.
That's where dreams come in. Where do you see yourself in five years? In ten? What are you doing currently to get there. That's right! Dreams are goals that you set and begin working toward. But dreams are not predictable or constant.
People change. And, as a result, what they want and where they want to be changes.
So how do you recognize what's a dream and what's a wish?
Easy. Which are you willing to work toward?
You can wish for a perfect life, but are you willing to work for it? What do you believe you can do to get there? And let's be honest. There is no such thing as a perfect life.
So the first step to discovering your dream, is to look at what you want, and decide what you are willing to do to get it.
Once you recognize your dream, the next thing to do is set a goal.
This could be a daily goal (like mine of writing every day) or a goal over months or years at a time.
I know most of us don't want to remember school, but what did you have to get the work done? A deadline. Setting a certain amount of time is an important structure to check your progress and feel accomplished once the goal is met.

Now here's the tricky part.
Once you have your goals, you have to stick to them, and this can be difficult.
There will be days you want to avoid it. Days you may even want to give up will test your patience, expectations and overall view of your life.
So once you set goals, you have to make sure that they are realistic. Can you write a book in a day? Probably not. A week? Maybe a short story? How about a month? (There is a contest to do this in November)
So before you set your goals, check your motivation, time and realistic expectations.

Once you have a goal, it's time to give yourself a pep talk. Don't Give Up! Keep Moving Forward!

This has been (hopefully) an inspirational post.

The Nine Tailed Wish: Chapter 1: The Wishing Tree

I stood before the wishing tree, with the white and pink papers dancing with the wind. One wish, and one ring of the bell. With a little magic, it might work. I decided that I would. This year, it would be something different. Something I haven't tried before. Maybe asking for help wasn't a bad thing after all, even if it did require a little faith.
"Sakura!" My mother called, as I stared at all these wishes, hopes and dreams, complementing the dark green and brown tree that hovered above me. If I didn't make my wish quick, I was in trouble.
The wish started as a simple thought, but as time wore on, and my worry that my mother would find me grew, the wish became a story. It grew from one sentence to two, and three and four. I found myself overwhelmed by the amount of things I wanted to happen in my life. As I stood there, my eyes shut tight, and my shoulders tensed, someone cleared their throat right in front of me.
Startled, I opened my eyes to see an old man, with a long wispy beard and jade green eyes staring at me. I looked around, no one else was in sight.
"What do you really want child?" the man asked.
I noticed that he wasn't dressed in modern clothing, but thought little of it. It was a festival after all. What worried me was the fact I couldn't hear my mother anymore, nor could I hear anyone else walking past this wishing tree, which was usually very popular.
"I asked you what you really wanted!" the man said sternly. He was watching me like I was up to no good, and I stared at the floor.
"Come on. I haven't got all day!"
He looked less angry than irriatated, and I waited for him to say something else.
"I wish to be human." I replied, the simple thought that had started the entire list in my head.
"Is that all?" He waved his hand like it was nothing. "But why do you want to be human?"
"You can see me?" I asked, suddeenly shocked that a human was talking to me.
"Why wouldn't I be able to see you?" He asked gruffly. "How else would I be talikng to you?"
"No humans can see me." I said, waiting for his reaction. He merely liftet a brow and shook his head.
"You still haven't answered my question." He said. "Why do you want to be human?"
I sighed. I supposed I would have to answer sooner or later.
"It's lonely." I said, "Be able to see the world grow and change around you, but you aren't a part of it. They don't see you. They don't talk to you. Sometimes they say something, or appear to be looking at you, but they aren't."
"I suppose that it lonely." The old man replied, "But you still haven't answered my question."
I was irritated. I had answered his question in full, yet he still wanted me to go on. Embarassed by my long list of wishes, I blushed and crossed my arms.
"Who are you, old man?"
He smiled and shook his head.
"Why won't you tell me?" I asked, stomping my foot. "You can't be human, or else you wouldn't be talking to me."
"I can't?" he asked with surprise.
I sighed again, and took a step away.
"Wait!" he said, "If I tell you who or what I am, you must promise to answer my question completely."
"Why?" I asked, my eyes turning blue.
"Because, I must hear every wish, every dream and every true desire of whoever walks past this tree."
I waited for more of an explanation, but he never gave one. He just smiled and said, "Your request is very rare. Not many divine creatures come to this tree wishing to become a human. The usual wishes I get are for love, health and happiness. Why is yours so different?"
"My real wish is to live life like the people I see everyday. To have friends, to go on adventures and of course to make a difference."
"Are these really all you wish for?" The old man asked with a wink. "Most young women ask for love. To find their soul mate."
I rolled my eyes.
"Fine, I saw this human. It was a long time ago, so I don't even know where he is now, but he was a very nice person. He had a way with people, talking to them, making them laugh. It was something I have never seen before."
"And you want to be human, so he can see you?"
I nodded, blushing again.
"Why didn't you tell me in the first place?" he said with a laugh.
"I didn't lie to you, and my mother will be here any minute looking for me."
"No she won't. I have frozen this place in time."
"You can do that?" I asked.
"I am the guardian of this tree, and the granter of wishes. But be warned that what you wish for is not always what you need or what you believe to want once it is granted."
"What do you mean?"
"It will be tough. You will learn the ugliness in the world, and you will be hurt, heart broken and even sick at times."
"I have seen this." I told him, "I watch humans."
"But you do not know what they know or feel what they feel. Humans feel pain, and they eventually die."
"I know that." I said, "But an eternity of loneliness is worse than a brief slice of life."
He looked at me strangely, as if he was proud and surprised.
"You have thought this through." He said, "So before I grant your wish, I will give you a hint. One must know who they are before they decide what they want. You must be accepted as you are, before I can make you human."
"You meant that some poor human has to accept this?"
I revealed my tails, all nine of them, and my eyes turned to an icy blue.
"There is one thing I have learned from the wishes I hear." The old man said, "Humans can surprise you. If you have faith that a human will accept you as you are, I will tell you what you must do to grant your wish."
I gulped. It was a big decision, but living year after year watching people grow and change, and having no part of it had taken its toll. Sure I could talk to goblins, wind spirits and other nine tailed foxes, but I had never felt like I belonged with any of them.
"I want to be human." I said.
"Then your task is simple, yet difficult." He replied. "You must find a human who will accept you as you are. I will give you nine months of visibility, one for each tail. When the nine months are up, you will either turn human, or you will return to the divine world."
"What about my family?" I asked.
"For nine months, you will walk among both the human and the divine world. By the end of those months you will either make a decision, or the world will choose for you. If you succeed, you will become human."
"And if I fail?"
"You will learn a very valuable lesson."
He stood there, waiting for me to answer. I thought about what it would be like. To live as if I were human and be able to communicate with them. To have a chance to find that young man, who changed my opinion about humans forever. It was a chance that I was willing to take. To live, if only for a little while would be perfect. I nodded.
"" I accept the challenge."
"Then starting tomorrow, you will be visible to humans. Good luck."
With that. The old man disappeared, and my mother rushed around the corner.
"Sakura! What happened?"
I stared at the tree, and saw that a new wish was tied on a branch facing me. My journey would begin tommorow.

Dreams and Wishes

She read everyday, anywhere that she could find. By her favorite tree, in the garden, near the swan pond, and, of course, in her own reading nook on the second floor. It was a special place, where she could escape anything unpleasant that reality often shoved upon her. The stable boy often found her asleep, a book in hand while he walked to tend to the horses. Her head on her shoulder, and a fairytale book nearly falling from her hands. He would smile as he walked by, knowing full well that her governess would find her sooner or later, and in her dancing dress! Like the swan from the story, she felt trapped, and often told him so. Once, she read to him, and he loved the story. It was about a poor boy, like himself becoming a hero and saving a princess from the giant's castle. One day, he was sure, he would rescue her, and they would find a place to be free. But these were dreams, wishes and fantasies that they both clung to. Maybe if they believed in wishes, dreams and fairytales, their belief would be strong enough to set them free.

Another year has come and gone . . .

It's new year's eve, and that means reflecting on the past year. Memorable moments, lessons learned and goals that were met. It also means coming up with a new year's resolution and looking toward the future.

Lessons learned this year:

"When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change."- Aang

I learned a lot about growing up this year.
I got a job  after college was over.
I learned a lot about healthy work place environments.
I had to say good bye to my best friend Haley, and learn to let her go.
I got in a car wreck that made me feel awful for hitting a deer, and totaling the car.
I took a stand against unhealthy relationships and reviewed my history with the bad habit of making them.
I had to accept that I cannot change others, but I can change myself.
In truth: The most important lessons I learned this year involved self compassion and wisdom.

Goals achieved this year:

I got published, sending one article to the Disney fan magazine MouseMag, and applying and getting an internship for Shine On Hollywood Magazine.
I published five articles this year, and one is on the way.
I got one of my dream jobs, working with books.
I found and made the chipped cup.
My RumBelle earrings sold like crazy this year, and I still have requests for a necklace and more earrings next year.
I finally found and bought Belle's Armani dress from Once Upon A Time's "The Crocodile."
I participated in an online Secret Santa event and turned it in on time.
I took on the Big Six Challenge and I'm almost finished with the first script for Nickolodeon.
I made my first Gingerbread House.

Highlights of the Year:

Once Upon A Time

Finding Nemo 3D

Arang and the Magistrate

Brave

Beauty and the Beast on CW

Disneyland

Shine On Hollywood Launch Party

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Wreck It Ralph

New Year's Resolutions:

1. The Big Six Challenge continues:

3. Get Published:
I plan to edit and publish Starlight this year

4. Get a life! No Seriously.

The future is unpredictable, but with the right mind set, maybe I can learn to make people proud, and find where I belong.

One percent

I learned a very important lesson this week.
I've spent most of my life reaching for something but not truly beliving in it. This particular thing is a positive outcome. I'm sure many people have gone through this. In order to protect yourself from disappointment, you decide to only expect the negative outcome of a situation. But the funny thing about life, is that it is unpredictable. That one percent chance isn't nonexistant. It's just more rare of a happening. But when you convince yourself that one percent doesn't exist, you can hurt the people you are close to. Just that alone can be the worst outcome out of all the negative possibilities you can think of.
So I learned this week, that sometimes growing up is believing in that one percent, and doing your best to help it happen. This can mean taking a risk, and rising to a challenge, but good things don't always happen on their own. Some good things must be earned through hard work and an open mind.

Inspirational songs

 image from: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llmo019yDF1qbwnr4o1_500.jpg

Every now and then I get a little stressed, sad or irritated, and I've created a playlist for those times.
The two most important songs on that playlist are . . .
"Firework" by Katy Perry
and
"Who Says" by Selena Gomez
There are many more songs on the playlist that are upbeat and inspiring, but these two in particular have kept me going on tough days and help me continue to pursue my dreams.
Enjoy :)

Writing Prompt 33: Why do you write?

I write for many reasons. It started as a way to come up with great stories. I would write story after story in elementary school. I wrote more poems in Middle School and finally from High School on I have written many different pieces. I love writing.
Writing was my escape for years. It's my escape from depression, hopelessness and of course doubt. When I write I can do anything and be anything, just like when I read I can go anywhere and become someone different. Truly great stories always contain an element of humanity, and I try to achieve that whenever I write. It could be anything, from an essay to a novel. Each time I write, I try to create a world where I can express who I am and what I believe. Hope is essential to my stories, and every single story I enjoy has some element of hope in it.
Writing is my therapy. It can take me away and teach me lessons I don't have the courage to learn, and take me on a journey to discover more about myself and the world around me. It's more than a hobby, it's a life style and a method of survival.
I get depressed when I don't write, similar to the way I get depressed when I don't sing. Sure, my writing isn't always happy and perfect, but it is a way to believe in myself. Whenever I write, I convince myself that I am someone important. It's a way for me to develop self confidence and achieve small goals that give me the courage to pursue greater goals. Writing gives me the courage to understand the world around me and discover what I can do.
The stories I read inspire me to write. Movies, television and even video games have encouraged me to come up with my own world, and create characters that give people hope. The hope to achieve goals and discover their identity.
In many ways, a story is the only place I feel like I can be myself, without judgement. I can believe the impossible and make a difference without facing the wall that I have put up.
So, why do I write? I write to dream, live, laugh and learn. And one day, I will develop enough courage to create my own true story of accomplishing my goals and living my dreams.

Two Good Stories

Today was a day for stories. Mom bought Beauty and the Beast tickets a while ago, so we went to see the Broadway musical at the Buel Theatre. The musical was amazing, and I loved the artistic accents they used for the castle, tavern and the village.  Beauty and the Beast is clearly my favorite fairy tale, and Disney movie. The musical expands on the story and focuses on a few themes for Belle and Beast. For Belle, the theme is home, as she feels she doesn't belong anywhere. Belle finds a way to live in the castle, and goes through a lesson of self discovery. She decides to stay with the Beast, but that doesn't mean she won't care for her father anymore. As her signature song "Home" states: "Home is where the heart is" and Belle learns what that means when she has to save her father from the villagers and the Beast from Gaston. For the Beast, the theme is acceptance. He must learn to accept the side of himself that he doesn't want to show. This acceptance can only be achieved through his own opinion of who he is, and how he wants to live. Once he lets Belle go, he learns that you can't make someone care for you by force, and it is you that must decide who you will be.
After the musical, my family and I saw John Carter. I've been reading the book, but I haven't finished it yet. The movie is a little different from what I've read so far, because Edgar Rice Burroughs is actually a character in the story. This movie had everything I love about a good story. A flawed character, epic plot and a good message. John Carter carries a burden from the beginning of the film. He his not able to let go of his past. His grief drives his decisions to avoid war, battles and getting close to anyone. Once he lands on Mars, he is forced to face his fear, with a war raging and the whole planet, except one city, under the influence of a brutal war lord. But even this nemesis is a pawn in a much more dangerous game of fate, secrecy and deception. Carter's choice is whether or not to live life again, after experiencing so much pain in the past. He finally makes his decision and even passes on the advice to Edgar Rice Burroughs. The message is to live life and make a difference, because sitting by and doing nothing is also a decision.
No matter what type of story we read, watch or write, the purpose of these tales is a disguised journey into what life is all about. Stories define who we are, whether we are heroes, outcasts or wanderers. Stories give us courage to face our fear, follow our dreams and live life in the best way we can. They inspire us to discover who we are, why we're here and what we are able to do. From greek myths and fairy tales to modern day novels and TV shows, stories teach us what it means to be human, and how to discover and achieve who we truly want to be.

Writing Prompt 31: My Dream House/ Room

 (The Beast's Library in Disneyland)
Prompt located here: http://writeonrightnow.blogspot.com/2006/12/writing-prompt-your-dream-houseroom.html

My dream house would have a water garden and a library.  It would be a light blue with brown trim, similar to the house I grew up in. It would probably be two stories with a small balcony, or a nice patio. A porch swing would be a must. The living room would be a soft green, very light with a few nice paintings and an indoor water fountain or water fall and aquarium. The stairs would be a soft blue with cherry wood railings. The kitchen would have a strawberry theme with frog salt and pepper shakers on lily pad shaped dinner mats. And yes, I would own a Mrs. Potts and chip teaset, along with a homemade tea set based off of Skin Deep.  It would be a simple place with a wood floor and small roses in the window. The must have room for my dream house would be a library with a Beauty and the Beast theme. Stained glass windows, if possible with the pictures from the movie, and "an enchanted rose" on a table by a nice arm chair and a globe. If possible, there would be a rolling ladder, and the walls would be covered with books and fairy tale paintings. The books would be organized and arranged artistically around my Beauty and the Beast collection.
The backyard and front yard would have gardens. The front yard would be relatively simple and feature a few roses and daisies. The backyard would have a koi fish pond with a small bridge going over it. I would love a Cherry Blossom tree and a willow tree, along with a small zen garden with sand and a rake. My kids would have a playhouse outside with a swing set and a slide, similar to one I had in my childhood. The dogs would have a little doghouse and play pen outside, and the cats would have a scratching post. And yes I will have wind chimes. My bedroom and kids bedrooms would probably have a theme, mine most likely Beauty and the Beast, and the guest room would have a story book or fairytale theme as well. The bathrooms would have a frog and waterlily theme, with a fish theme for the kids. If there was a basement, It would have a secret passage and an entertainment room for special events.
In short, my dream house would be based on the three things I love most, Beauty and the Beast, Fairy Tales and Asian Culture.

Hope and Light

Hope and Light
are side by side.
When you doubt,
they like to hide
in nooks and crannies,
behind the darkest cloud.
Hope and Light
aren't very loud.
You only find them
when you believe.
Light dwells in darkness
and Hope, doubt's reprieve.
