Arina stopped once she saw something moving in the water. The temple was surrounded by water. Only one path led to the temple, but what path? She only saw water everywhere. It covered the front stairs and shimmered in the sunlight. The thing moved closer, and Arina saw orange.
"It's a Tiger." Jok said, drawing his sword.
" I have a feeling we shouldn't fight it." Lin said, blocking the sword with her hand.
Hayne watched the tiger as it approached them. He took two steps forward and saw a carving on the pillar.
"Look." he said tracing the carving.
"It's a pattern." Arina whispered.
The carving showed a figure eight facing two rectangles. One rectangle was black, and the other was white. Below the figure eight were four circles.
The tiger was closer now, but instead of heading directly toward them, it veered off.
Arina walked toward the water again. she placed her staff near the shore and looked around. The depth of the water wasn't obvious. She couldn't see the bottom of any area near or far from the shore.
"We have to find these circles." Jok said, pointing at the carving. "There's one for each of us, and it looks like the only way."
"This isn't just water." Arina said, pointing at the shore. "It's magic."
The tiger came full circle and stopped. It held its gaze with Arina before moving toward the temple. She watched as the tiger swam in a figure eight. Once the pattern was performed, the great cat walked out of the water and sat in front of the temple doors. The test was not over.
"Let's try it." Arina nodded to Jok, who pointed to the water.
"The first pillar should be there." He pointed to a place in the water three feet from the shore.
" Who wants to go first?" Hayne asked, watching the tiger.
" I will." Arina said. She walked toward the water and took a step.
The water moved with each step she took, until the water made a small whirlpool. A circle of white marble The platform rose, along with three others. Jok, Lin and Hayne stood the platforms and the tiger stood up. The water cleared and the symbol of the figure eight became visible.
"Use magic." Lin said, staring at the symbol.
Arina put the staff in the water and waited. The power of wind rushed through the sphere and a light blue whirlwind moved the water along the path. The Tiger bowed it's head and the doors opened.
"One down." Jok said as the pillars formed marble stone paths.
" One to go." Hayne said walking toward the doors.
The Tiger paced twice outside the open doors and walked into the temple.
